Genealogy Sites / Databases

Ancestry.com
Ancestry has over 30 billion records from more than 80 countries, although predominantly from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia.  Many records contain information that can help you learn more about ancestors and trace your family further back in time.    Creating your online family tree, and searching other public trees is free, but if you want to search their database for records, a paid subscription is required.   Different memberships provide access to different records.

MyHeritage
The MyHeritage historical records search engine includes more than 18 billion genealogy records such as birth, marriage, death, burial, census, military, immigration, yearbooks, and other types of records, including scans of the original documents.    MyHeritage has more European records, whereas Ancestry has more North American records. So, based on where you believe the majority of your family comes from you may find an advantage in one database over the others

FindMyPast
Findmypast markets itself as the best family history website for British research with over 14 billion records.   Like Ancestry it holds all the main records that family historians rely on such as census and birth, marriage and death records and there is quite a lot of overlap between the two sites.
FindMyPast offers a facility to search the UK census by house address, which can be incredibly useful for genealogists.

GenesReunited
GenesReunited is owned by the same company that owns FindMyPast and the British Newspaper Archive.   It has a free basic family tree builder, and access to British and Irish records by subscription.

FamilySearch

FamilySearch
FamilySearch contains many of the same records as Ancestry and other online databases, however the main differential is that access to FamilySearch records are free.   FamilySearch has a particularly good collection of South African records.

GenDatabase
South Africa
’s biggest online Genealogy Research service, offering members access to more than 500,000,000 transcribed Genealogy-related records.  Information mainly consists of records for the past 100 years, although we do provide millions of external records from the mid-1600’s to the mid-1900’s.
